Hot foiling on cards is fun and easy!

As soon as I received my order of the new hot foil dies and foil from Stampin’ Up I wanted to try it out to see if it was easy to use so that I could incorporate it into my classes. I also have the SA Papercraft Fair coming up that I want to demonstrate the new system at.

So I tried it out with the dies I had ordered, and the 3 different foil colours: gold, silver and light pink. I tried foiling regular cardstock, two-toned cardstock, vellum and basic white. I had watched a few videos to give me some more ideas for using the dies without foil, and to use the “leftover” foil.

Here are the first lot of cards I made with some of the panels I foiled and one using a hot foil die in a different way.

The shiny foil is tricky to photograph well, but looks elegant in real life.

These two cards have been made using one piece of foil – yes you can get “two for one”. I used gold hot foil with the Garden Silhouette hot foil die on Basic White cardstock. The Garden Silhouette hot foil die is a large background die that is large enough to cover a whole card front. You can then use the whole background like I have here, or cut it down to fit smaller panels, or die cut with different shapes.

The sentiment is part of the Sweetly Sentimental hot foil dies, and here I used gold foil on Basic Black cardstock. The dies include a cutting die to cut out the sentiments after you have foiled them.

The gorgeous background die can also be used in a different way without foil. Here I applied Crisp Cantaloupe ink to the die and put Basic White cardstock on top before running it through my die cutting machine. The ink is pressed into the cardstock. I cut the panel down and put it on a Calypso Coral card base that I had embossed with a long retired embossing folder.

For this card I used silver hot foil on Basic White cardstock, then blended ink with blending brushes, masking off a section at the top.

For this card I stamped the Botanical Glow stamp in Peaceful Pine ink on a panel of Peaceful Pine two-toned cardstock to give a tone on tone look. I then used the Botanical Glow hot foil die with silver foil to add the elegant overlay. The stamp and die are not meant to line up exactly, they are meant to complement each other. I added a leafy die cut from vellum using one of the Nature’s Symphony dies, and the greeting is from the Classic Greetings hot foil dies, also in silver, on Basic White. 

I had fun creating this first batch of cards, and I have plenty of leftover foil and a few panels to create more cards soon.
